Moral teaching through classics: Kantian tools for a 21st century education

Abstract

The objective of this work is to present the main lines of the Kantian thought on education and to underline the ideas of his theory that may be relevant to contemporary education and even to the development of democracy. This study will explore how, according to Kant, education makes individuals specifically human and is directly related to rationality. With a special emphasis on the Bildung, understood as the construction of a moral personality , and not only as the transmission of specific contents or subjects, education becomes the key of human perfection. In this sense, education always has to look towards the future, in order to achieve, step by step, the progressive improvement of the human species.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar las principales líneas del pensamiento kantiano sobre educación y subrayar las ideas de esta teoría que pueden ser relevantes para la educación contemporánea e incluso para el desarrollo de la democracia. Este estudio explorará cómo, según Kant, la educación hace a los individuos específicamente humanos y está directamente relacionada con la racionalidad. Con especial énfasis en la Bildung, entendida como la construcción de una personalidad moral, y no sólo como la transmisión de contenidos o materias concretas, la educación se convierte en la clave de la perfección humana. En este sentido, la educación siempre tiene que mirar hacia el futuro, para lograr, paso a paso, la mejora progresiva de la especie humana.
