Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of age-related diseases that represent a worldwide health problem. They share some characteristics, such as loss of protein homeostasis, protein misfolding, oxidative stress or neuroinflammation, among others, which result in progressive neuronal dysfunction and finally lead to neuronal death. Specifically, in Alzheimer's disease deposits of β-amyloid and neurofibrillary tangles occur, which together with the set of common characteristics mentioned above, lead to neuronal degeneration. There is currently no effective treatment for Alzheimer's disease that is capable of halting its course. Given this perspective, it is necessary to develop new molecules capable of acting on more than one target simultaneously, since it is a disease of multifactorial etiology. Moreover, for the time being, it is not possible to establish an early diagnosis of this disease. Generally, when it is diagnosed, it is very advanced, with patients showing high cognitive and cerebral deterioration. In this context, the development of theranostic compounds capable of diagnosing the disease and, at the same time, constituting a treatment for it in the same chemical entity is a very promising strategy...
