Conducta suicida en adolescentes: un análisis de redes

Abstract

Objetivo: hasta el momento, no se ha analizado la conducta suicida en población adolescente mediante el análisis de redes. Es necesario incorporar nuevos acercamientos psicológicos que permitan comprender la conducta suicida bajo un prisma diferente. El objetivo principal de este trabajo fue doble: a) analizar la conducta suicida mediante el análisis de redes; y b) investigar la relación entre la conducta suicida y diferentes factores de riesgo y protección en adolescentes escolarizados. Método: participaron 443 estudiantes españoles (M=14,3 años; DT=0,53; 51,2% mujeres) seleccionados de forma incidental de diferentes centros educativos. Se administraron instrumentos de medida para evaluar la conducta suicida, las dificultades emocionales y comportamentales, la conducta prosocial, el bienestar emocional subjetivo, la inteligencia emocional, la autoestima, la sintomatología depresiva, la empatía, el afecto positivo y negativo y la regulación emocional. Resultados: la red estimada de conducta suicida se encontró fuertemente interconectada. El nodo más central en términos de fuerza e influencia esperada fue “considerar quitarse la vida". En la red psicológica estimada de conducta suicida y factores de riesgo y protección, los nodos más centrales en función de su fuerza fueron: sintomatología depresiva, afecto positivo y preocupación empática. En términos de influencia esperada, los nodos más influyentes fueron los referidos las habilidades de inteligencia emocional percibida. La conducta suicida se relacionó positivamente con síntomas de depresión y afecto negativo, y negativamente con autoestima y afecto positivo. Los resultados del análisis de estabilidad indicaron que las redes fueron estimadas con precisión. Conclusiones: la conducta suicida se puede conceptualizar como un sistema complejo de características cognitivas, emocionales y conductuales que interactúan causalmente entre sí. Los nuevos modelos psico(pato)lógicos permiten comprender la conducta humana y los problemas de salud mental desde una óptica diferente, sugiriendo nuevas formas de conceptualización, evaluación, intervención y prevención.

Objective: Suicidal behaviour has not yet been analysed from a network approach in adolescent samples. It is imperative to incorporate new psychological models to understand suicidal behaviour from a different perspective. The main objective of this work was twofold: (a) to examine suicidal behaviour through network analysis and (b) to estimate the psychological network between suicidal behaviour and protective and risk factors in school-age adolescents. Method: Participants were 443 students (M = 14.3 years; SD = 0.53; 51.2% female) selected incidentally from different schools. Different instruments were administered to assess suicidal behaviour, emotional and behavioural difficulties, prosocial behaviour, subjective well-being, emotional intelligence, self-esteem, depressive symptomatology, empathy, positive and negative affect, and emotional regulation. Results: The resulting network of suicidal behaviour was strongly interconnected. The most central node in terms of strength and expected influence was “Consider taking your own life”. In the estimated psychological network of suicidal behaviour and risk and protective factors, the nodes with the highest strength were depressive symptomatology, positive affect, and empathic concern. The most influential nodes were those related to emotional intelligence abilities. Suicidal behaviour was positively connected to depression symptoms and negative affect, and negatively connected to self-esteem and positive affect. The results of the stability analysis indicated that the networks were accurately estimated. Conclusions: Suicidal behaviour can be conceptualized as a dynamic, complex system of cognitive, emotional, and affective characteristics. The new psychopathological and psychometric models allow us to analyse and understand human behaviour and mental health problems from a new perspective, suggesting new forms of conceptualization, evaluation, intervention, and prevention.
