La boda de Alfonso XIII: pasión espectacular y jerarquías sociales

Abstract

En mayo de 1906 Alfonso XIII contrajo matrimonio con Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg. Madrid fue, lógicamente, la sede del enlace. En los preparativos y celebraciones diseñados para dar un mayor realce a la boda se escogió a la nobleza y, especialmente, a los Grandes de España como grupo social más destacado. Allí donde acudieran ocupaban los puestos más destacados. A pesar del atentado, el ritmo de las celebraciones no se detuvo y se siguió subrayando el puesto destacado reservado a la Grandeza. La elección de esa jerarquía “de otro tiempo” plantea interesantes cuestiones para entender la sociedad mezcla de lo antiguo y de lo nuevo, propia de comienzos de siglo

In May 1906, Alfonso XIII got married with Victoria Eugenia Battenberg. Logically, Madrid was the chosen place for the wedding. Preparations and celebrations were designed to highlight the marriage. In that context, nobility and, especially, Grandes of Spain were chosen as the most outstanding social group. Every event they visited, the Grandes occupied the most important positions. However the assassination attempt, the celebrations did not stop and still stressed the main position reserved for the Grandes. The preference for this ‘old fashioned’ hierarchy suggests interesting questions, in order to understand this society mixed between the old and the new, quite of the beginning of the century.
