Abstract
ABSTRACT: The present paper aims to develop a brief history of the evolution of the popular short story from its origins. By doing so, we will show how this genre became something halfway between the novel and more popular forms of uneasy classification. Finally, during the 19th century, the short story gained its definitive shape and reached the literary excellency among the most important literary traditions. The article will also try to offer a vision on the unsolved dispute for the terminology between those who prefer tale and those who prefer short story.
