dc.description.abstract1.- INTRODUCTION, AIMS AND NULL HYPOTHESIS. The success of dental restorations is determined by 4 main factors: biocompatibility, aesthetic value, resistance to fracture and marginal adaptation. An inadequate marginal fit may compromise the longevity of the restoration. Still, there is no consensus on what is the maximum marginal gap width that could be considered clinically acceptable, ranging from 50 to 200 μm according to different authors. After a 5-year study conducted on more than 1000 restorations, McLean and Von Fraunhofer concluded that 120μm was the maximum tolerable marginal opening. Marginal and internal fit can be influenced by several factors, starting from the impression phase to the final cementation process. In general dental practice, impressions using elastomer materials (polyether and vinyl poly-siloxane), are a conventional procedure. Although high-quality impressions are achievable by using these impression techniques and workflows, several mistakes associated with the intraoral phase (subgingival preparations, presence of blood, saliva, etc) or laboratory procedures (disinfection, pouring the impression, transport, etc.) may occur, leading to inaccuracies. The computer aid design/computer aid manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques for dental restorations have been developed to optimize the quality of the restorations as well as the efficiency of the workflow. Another target is the production of high resistance ceramic restorations which, up to date, can only be produced with these techniques. The popularity of these materials has increased significantly in the last decade due to their aesthetic, mechanical and biocompatibility properties. Nowadays, various optical impression systems have been developed with which direct impressions could be made in the oral cavity. All of these systems work with a standard open or closed (encrypted) file format called S.T.L. which stands for “Stereo lithography” or “Standard Triangle Language”, because they use the technology of “ cloud of points” connected by different triangles...
