Abstract

Retroperitoneal schwannomas are uncommon tumors usually confused with other primary retroperitoneal neoplasms. Although clinical manifestations are predominantly non-specific, sciatica may be seen on sorne occasions. We consider these tumors should be included in the differential diagnosis with this clinical entity. Most retroperitoneal schwannomas show characteristic radiological findings on CT and MRI studies, that usually allow differentiation from other primary retroperitoneal neoplasms and from other diseases also causing atypical sciatica. We present three case reports of patients harboring retroperitoneal schwannomas with different clinical manifestations in which preoperative radiological studies suggested the benign nature of these neoplasms. A review of the characteristics of these tumors is also reported.Los neurinomas retroperitoneales son tumores poco frecuentes que habitualmente son confundidos con otras lesiones retroperitoneales de peor pronóstico. Aunque en general cursan con molestias inespecíficas, no es raro que la lumbociática constituya parte de sus manifestaciones clínicas. Considerando que los neurinomas retroperitoneales muestran patrones característicos en el estudio por TAC y R.M., deberían incluirse en el diagnóstico diferencial de esta entidad. Presentamos tres casos clínicos de neurinoma retroperitoneal con diferente perfil sintomático en los que los hallazgos radiológicos permitieron orientar el diagnóstico hacia tumoraciones benignas, revisando además la literatura publicada al respecto.
