La Legión española en su centenario: de los antecedentes a su función

Abstract

Inicié esta investigación a cinco años del primer centenario de la Legión Española. Me movía un propósito primordial: poner de manifiesto los motivos por los que nació y explicar su constitución inicial. Así las cosas, quedan fuera de mi alcance los cambios que ha ido experimentando a lo largo de todo este tiempo, debidos a los avatares de la Historia y los derroteros seguidos por la política en España.La importancia que, en mi opinión, tiene el tema y las escasez de publicaciones al respecto me animaron a investigar los posibles antecedentes del fenómeno del voluntariado militar en el Ejército español, el marco legal que permitió que se formara y la identificación de los implicados en el proceso. Por otro lado, y considerando que Francia contaba desde 1831 con una Legión Extranjera que daba excelentes resultados en el norte de África, me pareció interesante averiguar por qué España tardó casi cien años en imitar esta iniciativa en sus posesiones africanas. Tras manejar más de 50.000 documentos -sin contar libros editados-, se presenta el resultado de la citada investigación, que aporta nuevos datos relativos tanto a las condiciones de organización de la Legión Española, como a los actores que intervinieron directamente en esa tarea. En mi sentir, el fruto principal de mi trabajo hay que buscarlo, antes de nada, en mi interés creciente por el Ejército español en el primer cuarto del siglo XX, que merecerá mi esfuerzo permanente de aquí adelante...

I began this work five years before the celebration of the first Century of the Spanish Legion, with the aim of giving more visibility to the lack of publications that focused on the causes that generated its organization, from the previous background in the Spanish Army, to the legal framework that allowed the identification of the different characters that were involved in the process. On the other hand, and considering that France had had a Foreign Legion since 1831, which had given excellent results in North Africa, I found interesting to try to find out why Spain took almost a hundred years to imitate this initiative in their African possessions. After handling more than 50,000 documents -without counting edited books-, this work is presented providing new information regarding both the conditions of the organization of the Spanish Legion, as well as the actors who intervened directly in the task; although the most important result is the interest in continuing with the investigation of the Spanish Army during the first quarter of the 20th century...
