Abstract
El cáncer gástrico continúa posesionándose como una de las neoplasias malignas más mortales en el mundo, especialmente en regiones menos desarrolladas como América Latina. Pese a la tendencia global de querer un descenso en las tasas de mortalidad por cáncer gástrico, en Colombia la enfermedad todavía representa una gran problemática social. Uno de los principales inconvenientes es que, debido a la inexistencia en la actualidad de un método de cribado apropiado para la población en riesgo, la mayor parte de los casos son diagnosticados en un estadio avanzado, cuando el pronóstico es devastador. La enfermedad es generalmente letal cuando se detecta clínicamente, ya que en la mayoría de los casos se diagnostica cuando el tumor ha invadido la capa muscular del estómago. No obstante, cuando el tumor se descubre en fase inicial, la tasa de supervivencia a 5 años puede superar el 90%...

Besides of the global tendency searching for the decrease of the mortality rate produced by gastric cancer, in Colombia this illness still represents a high social problem. One of the most important drawbacks is that, because of the current unavailability of a suitable screening method for the risk population, most of the cases are diagnosed when the prognosis is devastating.
