Pearl S. Buck as a bridge between the East and the West : a transpacific study of her non-fiction works

Abstract

Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892-1973) was a renowned American writer who earned distinction as the first female American Nobel Prize laureate in Literature. Her works were commended by former President Richard Nixon of the United States (1969-1974) as being a "bridge between the civilizations of East and West" (Nixon, 1973). Buck was a multifaceted individual, who was not only a writer, but also a scholar and social activist with a rich imaginative mind and a wealth of insightful thoughts. Her novels, which primarily portrayed China and its people to Western audiences and served to introduce Chinese culture, were accompanied by a corpus of non-fictional works and speeches which aimed to foster cultural exchange, increase mutual understanding, and promote cultural inclusiveness. While, as a Nobel prize winner, her fictional narrative corpus has received a huge critical attention, her non-fictional works (autobiographies, essays, speeches, articles for the media, and so on), which are in line with the spirit of her fictional works, have not received the same level of academic recognition that they deserve.
