Abstract
Baseado na minha pesquisa junto a travestis brasileiras trabalhadoras do sexo no Rio de Janeiro, este artigo pretende descentrar a forte associação entre trabalho sexual e mulher (cisgênero) e, ao mesmo tempo, questionar a forma “correta” (isto é, branca e de classe média) que alguns discursos hegemônicos utilizam para apresentar as identidades trans. Proponho uma aproximação interseccional para analisar os distintos signifcados que as participantes conferem ao trabalho sexual para nos determos nas experiências de uma população para quem o trabalho sexual é uma forma de empoderamento e de ubicação – ainda que precária – no mundo. Assim, o lugar da beleza na construção de corpos femininos e desejáveis é de grande importância para possibilitar que as travestis se convertam em sujeitos inteligíveis num contexto social onde a delgada linha que separa a vida da morte estrutura o cotidiano travesti.
Based on my research with Brazilian travesti sex workers in Rio de Janeiro, this article aims to decentre the strong association between sex work and (cisgender) women and, at the same time, question the “correct” way (that is, white and middle class) that some hegemonic discourses use when presenting trans identities. I propose an intersectional approach to analyse the diferent meanings the participants give to sex work in order to focus on the experiences of a population for whom sex work is a form of empowerment and a way to situate them – although precariously – in the world. Tus, the place of beauty in the construction of feminine and desirable bodies is of great importance to enable the travestis to become intelligible subjects in a social context where the fne line between life and death structures their daily lives.
