Abstract
Cultural Heritage conservation-restoration was born recently, looking to stress above all the diferences with “traditional restoration” crats. his bad adjustment between professions and scientiic subjects may imply, and in fact implies, that traditional crafts and artistry are sometimes being considered “unfair competition” instead of “intangible heritage”. Galician stonemason tradition is probably the most important evidence of this, because of its important presence in this territory, whose main symbol is the exceptional Stonemason’s School, linked to the regional institution Deputación de Pontevedra. All administrations should look for and ater the main objective, material and intangible cultural heritage, trying to improve education regulations, professional competences and stabilishing a “code of good practices” around heritage. In sumary, this article tries to explain the special characteristics of stone masonry in comparison with other heritage professions, looking speciically at the situation in Northwestern Iberia, Galicia and Pontevedra province.
