First New Left británica y sus publicaciones: un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de las revistas Universities and Left Review, New Reasoner y New Left Review (1957-1962)

Abstract

Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el escenario político de Gran Bretaña cambió radicalmente en un período de apenas quince años. En este trabajo se tratan, de manera muy concisa y concreta, los síntomas políticos, culturales y sociales de uno de estos cambios a través de su expresión en las revistas Universities and Left Review, The New Reasoner y New Left Review. Estas tres revistas cristalizaron el movimiento político del que hablábamos más arriba, la Nueva Izquierda, en su axioma británico, quizás la expresión más intensa de este fenómeno político – social. El centro de atención de este trabajo recae centralmente sobre la New Left Review, pero con el convencimiento de que ésta no fue un nuevo producto cultural creado ex novo (como se suele plantear) sino que es la expresión final del trabajo político, el desarrollo conceptual y el sistema comunicacional de las otras dos revistas previas a las que prestamos atención - Universities and Left Review y the New Reasoner. Es por esta razón por la que el marco cronológico del presente trabajo comprende desde 1957 (año de creación de la Universities and Left Review y el New Reasoner) hasta 1962, año en el que la llamada First New Left se dispersó al renunciar todos sus miembros fundadores a participar de ella, dejando en manos de unos terceros el destino de la New Left Review...

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Great Britain’s political scenery change drastically in no more than fifteen years. This work analyses in a concise and concrete path the political, cultural and social symptoms throughout the journals Universities and Left Review, The New Reasoner y New Left Review. These publications crystallized the political movement of the New Left in its British axiom, perhaps the strongest expression of this political and social phenomenon. The backbone of this project lays on the publications of the New Left Review but always convinced that it was not a new born cultural product created ex novo, but the final stage of a previous communication system created by the Universities and Left Review and the New Reasoner. Precisely, this is the reason why this study starts in 1957 (year of the foundation of these two journals) and ends in 1962, when the so-called First New Left dispersed and other hands took power of the editorial committee...
