Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The paper reflects on why critical thinking is increasingly talked about in education but in a more defective way; hence the discrediting. The purpose is therefore to reconsider the different arguments, theories and studies in order to discern the critical points that separate legitimate conceptions from those that are not, in accordance with the minimum requirements and the maximum desirability. METHOD. An analysis is made of the failures arising from both the ‘old’ ways of characterising the critical thinker and the ‘new’ tendency to promote ‘the critical’ in education with little or no critical thinking. To this end, the theoretical and practical bases of five dilemmas are reconsidered: skills/capacities and criteria, ‘the logical’ and ‘the epistemic’, critical and virtuous thinking, the ‘academic pandemic’ and the ‘vacuum’ of international and national policies. RESULTS. In each of the dilemmas discussed, ways out are offered to discern critical thinking from uncritical thinking. Thus, as a whole, the paper does not attempt to conclude with a single view of critical thinking that is supposed to overcome all the inconsistencies discussed. Instead, what it offers are reasons to advocate a minimum, attending to the necessary components and the fallibilist vision that it entails. This overcomes the reductionist pretensions that arise in favour of efficiency and mere concreteness. DISCUSSION. The possible ways out of this discrediting arise, then, from a critical view of critical thinking and education in critical thinking itself; it cannot be otherwise. Keywords: Critical thinking, Educational Principles, Educational Philosophy, Educational Policy.
The paper reflects on why critical thinking is increasingly talked about in education yet in a flawed mannerhence its discredit. The purpose is therefore to reconsider the different arguments, theories and studies in order to discern the critical points that separate legitimate conceptions from those that are not, in accordance with the minimum requirements and the maximum desirability. METHOD. An analysis is made of the failures arising from both the ‘old’ ways of characterising the critical thinker and the ‘new’ tendency to promote ‘the critical thinking’ in education with little or no actual critical thinking. Instead, what it offers are rea-sons to advocate a minimum, attending to the necessary components and the fallibilist vision that it entails. This over-comes the reductionist pretensions that arise in favour of efficiency and mere concreteness. DISCUSSION. The possible ways out of this discrediting arise, then, from a critical view of critical thinking and education in critical thinking itself; it cannot be otherwise.
DISCUSSION.
