Representaciones geopolíticas de la identidad regional del Caribe : un análisis crítico del discurso desde la República Dominicana sobre el Caribe

Abstract

La presente tesis doctoral titulada: Representaciones Geopolíticas de la Identidad regional del Caribe: un análisis crítico del discurso desde la República Dominicana sobre el Caribe, parte de la comprensión del “Caribe” como región, abordando la identidad regional y la construcción regional del Caribe desde el ámbito de las representaciones sociales que devienen en representaciones geopolíticas, en el caso que nos toca, de los agentes diplomáticos y funcionarios de la República Dominicana, quienes delimitan, en mayor o menor medida, la política exterior de este país y, en este sentido, las prácticas geopolíticas desde la República Dominicana hacia el regionalismo en el Caribe. Visto lo anterior, abordamos en esta tesis doctoral, como objetivo general, analizar, desde un enfoque cognitivo-discursivo, las representaciones que constituyen la identidad regional caribeña y la identidad nacional dominicana de los diplomáticos/funcionarios de la República Dominicana, y su correlación con la articulación de los códigos/modelos geopolíticos que configuran la producción, aplicación o, inclusive el alcance de la política exterior de la República Dominicana que conciernen al regionalismo en el Caribe y de su imaginario del espacio regional caribeño...

The present doctoral dissertation entitled: Representaciones Geopolíticas de la Identidad regional del Caribe: un análisis crítico del discurso desde la República Dominicana sobre el Caribe, begins from the meaning of the “Caribbean” as a region, addressing the regional identity as well as the Caribbean regional construction from the domain of the social representations understood as geopolitical representations, in this case, from the Dominican Republic´s diplomats agents and officials, who delimit, to a greater or lesser extent, the foreign policy of this country and, in this sense, the geopolitical practices from the Dominican Republic towards regionalism in the Caribbean. In view of the above, in this doctoral thesis, the general objective is to analyze, from a cognitive-discursive approach, the representations that constitute the Caribbean regional identity and the diplomats/official´s national identity, with the articulation between the geopolitical codes/models that configure the production, application or even the scope of the Dominican Republic´s foreign policy that concern regionalism in the Caribbean and its Caribbean regional imaginary. So, it asks: how do representations (beliefs, values, opinions) shape the Caribbean regional identity and the Dominican national identity of diplomats/officials (experts) and, in turn, it shapes the codes/orders that articulate the production, application and/or impact of the Dominican Republic’s foreign policy concerning regionalism in the Caribbean and, in this sense, its regional (re)construction? Consequently, it is stated that the opinions, beliefs, and values that constitute the geopolitical representations of diplomats and officials (experts) in the Dominican Republic shape geopolitical codes/orders, using inherited forms of geographical/identity knowledge about the Caribbean and Dominican national identity, as cognitive-geopolitical models and, consequently, determine the agenda.
