Abstract

Spanish research on Roman military archaeology has progressed slowly in comparison to that in countries. Over the past 25 years, a complete renovation of the methodological approaches and qualitative advances in the knowledge of the military bases have been made, as we could see in some recent works about the Roman Army. More attention is now paid to the contexts of military material (militaria, pottery..). From tactics to logistics, beyond classification and typology, all aspects of warfare are now valid subjects. The emphasis of research in Spain has been focused largely on identification of battlefields and Roman forts employing systems of georeferenced surveys with metal detectors, aerial intensive explorations and recent identification systems through satellite such as LiDAR. Thanks to this efforts episodes known only through classical texts, such as the Sertorian or the Cantabrian wars, begin to be reconstructed with archaeological data. It continues the research of Roman Camps on some urban field-work, of which León was the best example. We try to present here some examples to illustrate the progress of archaeological activities in military contexts
