El censo de Augusto

Abstract

Hasta hace relativamente poco -finales del S. XIX-, sólo conocíamos del Censo de Augusto por dos fuentes: el Evangelio de San Lucas, y Antigüedades judías del historiador Flavio Josefo. En todo caso, ambos textos coincidían en un hecho tremendamente singular hasta el momento: la universalidad del censo. Hasta entonces, las fuentes nos hablaban de los censos romanos como algo exclusivo de aquellos pocos individuos que disfrutaban del privilegio de la ciudadanía, quienes cada lustro acudían a Roma acensarse con el pesar de los impuestos que ello implicaba, pero también con la ilusión de ver imponerse sus privilegios políticos...

Until relatively recent times -the end of the 19th century- we only knew about the Augustus’ census from two sources: The Gospel of Saint Luke, and “Jewish Antiquities” by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. In any case, both texts coincident until then in the reference to an extremely singular event: the universality of the census. Until then the historical sources told us about the Roman censuses as something exclusive to those few individuals who enjoyed the privilege of citizenship, who every five years went to Rome to censor themselves with the payment of the taxes that implied, but also with the illusion of seeing their political privileges reaffirmed...
