Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hepcidin is a liver synthesized protein which was discovered in 2000. It is a 25 amino acid protein that has a double function: it regulates iron metabolism by hepcidinferroportin pathway, and it acts as an immunological and inflammation modulator by means of the stimulation from different inflammatory pathways. This protein presents as well a host defensive function. The gender, the age and the circadian rhythm are some physiological factors that can behave as confusion factors as they vary this hormone levels. Hepcidin knowledge has been gained through experimental models. Furthermore, there are no standard hepcidin measurement systems that allows to compare different studies. In addition, there are no hepcidin reference values in the general population. The main objective in this study was to analyze hepcidin behavior in different clinical situations and evaluate if it can play a role in the diagnosis of certain pathologies...
