Abstract
Esta tesis analiza la construcción de la imagen de China en la literatura española del siglo XX, un periodo marcado por profundos cambios políticos, sociales y culturales en España y China. A partir del concepto "orientalismo" de Edward Said, se examina cómo los escritores españoles representaron a China, generalmente desde una perspectiva eurocéntrica, con una visión que oscilaba entre la admiración por su tradición milenaria y la percepción de atraso y exotismo. El estudio se centra en las representaciones de China en los relatos de viaje de tres escritoras españolas: Marcela de Juan, María Teresa León y Mercedes Rosúa, quienes visitaron China en momentos clave de la historia de ambos países. Marcela de Juan, con un profundo conocimiento de ambas culturas, presenta una China en constante transformación, donde lo tradicional y lo moderno coexisten. María Teresa León, en Sonríe China, viaja en 1957, cuando China consolidaba su régimen socialista, y ofrece una visión positiva de sus logros sociales, contrastando con la situación de exilio que vivía en España bajo la dictadura de Franco. Por su parte, Mercedes Rosúa, que viaja en 1973-1974, durante el inicio de las relaciones diplomáticas entre China y España, inicialmente percibe China de manera negativa, marcada por estereotipos de atraso y pobreza. This thesis analyzes the construction of the image of China in 20th-century Spanish literature, a period marked by profound political, social, and cultural changes in both Spain and China. Using Edward Said's concept of "orientalism," it examines how Spanish writers represented China, generally from a Eurocentric perspective, witha view oscillating between admiration for its ancient tradition and perceptions of backwardness and exoticism.The study focuses on the representations of China in the travel narratives of three Spanish writers: Marcela de Juan, María Teresa León, and Mercedes Rosúa, who visited China at key moments in the history of both countries. Marcela de Juan, with a deep understanding of both cultures, presents a China in constant transformation, where tradition and modernity coexist. María Teresa León, in Sonríe China, travels in 1957,when China was consolidating its socialist regime, offering a positive view of its social achievements, contrasting with her own exile situation in Spain under Franco's dictatorship. On the other hand, Mercedes Rosúa, who visited in 1973-1974, during the beginning of diplomatic relations between China and Spain, initially perceives Chinan egatively, marked by stereotypes of backwardness and poverty. Over time, her view becomes more nuanced, reflecting a more complex understanding of China's reality...
