Abstract
El problema de investigación discutido en esta tesis doctoral examina por un lado, los fundamentos teóricos del juego y la educación en los trabajos de la filósofa Jane Addams y, por otro, las continuidades y discontinuidades de su pensamiento en las obras y las escuelas de formación de playworkers de Neva Boyd en el contexto del settlement Hull-House de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Para tal fin, he estudiado las ideas de estas autoras en perspectiva teórica e histórica bajo la óptica metodológica de Quentin Skinner. En mi tesis doctoral sostengo que la filosofía de la educación pragmatista de Addams fue un ejemplo práctico y teórico de cómo experiencias estéticas -como el teatro, la danza y la música folclórica, el museo o el juego infantil organizados y supervisados educativamente- proporcionaban a niños, niñas y adolescentes de diferentes orígenes culturales, étnicos, religiosos y lingüísticos oportunidades para socializar la democracia, construyendo así una forma de vida colectiva, asociada y cosmopolita. Estas experiencias permitían la expresión de la liberación del poder de la imaginación y, en última instancia, la sensibilización estética o el amor por la belleza. La práctica de experiencias estéticas como el juego organizado y supervisado por adultos posibilitaba el cultivo de un tipo de patriotismo cósmico pacifista...
The research problem discussed in this doctoral thesis examines, on the one hand, the theoretical foundations of children's play and education in the works of the philosopher Jane Addams and, on the other hand, the continuities and discontinuities of her thought and action in the works and the playworker training schools of Neva Boyd in the context of the Hull-House settlement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. To this end, I have studied the ideas of these authors from a theoretical and historical perspective under the methodological lens of Quentin Skinner. In my doctoral dissertation I argue that Addams' philosophy of education was a practical and theoretical example of how aesthetic experiences - such as educationally organized and supervised theater, dance and folk music, museum or children's play -provided children and adolescents from different cultural, ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds with opportunities to socialize democracy. These aesthetic experiences allowed for the expression of the liberation of imagination and, ultimately, aesthetic sensitivity or love of beauty. The collective practice of aesthetic experiences made possible the cultivation of a cosmic pacifist patriotism...
