Abstract
This study deals with the botanical pictorial work of the 18th-century Bohemian philanthropist, scientist and naturalist Thaddeus Haenke, an unfairly forgotten figure who embarked on the Malaspina expedition in 1789 to devote his life to knowledge. This study also addresses the procedures, pictorial techniques and innovative materials he used, on which no detailed study had yet been carried out in the painting field, the characteristics and peculiarities of his botanical studies, and his paradigmatic colour chart, as unknown and enigmatic as it is fascinating, in which he carried out one of the first studies in history on colour theory, and which is kept in the Archives of the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid. Tadeo Haenke, who had no training in painting, demonstrated, however, through his dedication to the necessary knowledge of colour, materials and painting techniques, that this knowledge bring with it greater freedom when painting from nature.
