Abstract
The thurifer is the acolyte who carries the censer in the liturgy. In some cases, this function is performed by angels, deacons or subdeacons. The censer is the artifact that allows the burning of incense in the liturgy. It is formed by a container that opens from chains. The acolyte holds the chains and ensures that the incandescent coal inside does not go out during the ceremonies. In some cases, the thurifer also carries a container in his hands containing the incense, called boat. In the Middle Ages, the thurifer is dressed with white alb or surplice above the cassock.
