Abstract
Los desgarros perineales de origen obstétrico que afectan al esfínter anal son la causa más frecuente de incontinencia anal en la mujer. Conllevan importantes consecuencias a corto, medio y largo plazo entre las que se incluyen incontinencia de heces y gases, dispareunia y disfunción sexual, dolor pélvico crónico y, por ello, gran afectación de la calidad de vida. Su prevalencia es variable dependiendo del país donde se realiza el estudio y de las características de la población estudiada. En España las cifras de prevalencia comunicadas son del 1,4% al 2,4%. Existen factores de riesgo identificados en la producción de desgarros obstétricos de alto grado, muchos de ellos no modificables, como la edad, la paridad o el peso fetal.
