Abstract
The Hirak, a popular movement contesting the Algerian regime since February 2019, has from the start rejected all foreign interference in Algeria’s internal affairs. The official discourse of the elites in power has been the same, with non-interference a key principle. This article examines non-interference as a core pillar of Algerian nationalist political culture as it developed after the country’s war of independence, and the use of this principle, which has been subject to numerous interpretations by both the regime and opposition forces.
