Iconografía de Lucrecia. Repercusiones plásticas en la Península Ibérica

Abstract

La historia de Lucrecia, narrada entre otros por Tito Livio, ha sido uno de los pasajes de la civilización romana que más impacto ha tenido en la iconografía y la plástica occidental. La Península Ibérica no fue ajena a ese uso, y en ocasiones abuso, de la imagen de Lucrecia. Fue convertida en exemplum, modelo de castidad y virtud, que ocasionó la caída de la monarquía romana. Así, su imagen fue utilizada por las mujeres casadas o casaderas como equiparación de su estatus moral en el Renacimiento, como se pone de manifiesto en las representaciones en palacios y grabados españoles. Pero paradójicamente, también como imagen sexualizada y erótica, muy lejos del ideal romano. A través del presente artículo, analizaremos cuáles han sido las repercusiones del pasaje relativo a Lucrecia en la Península Ibérica, haciendo hincapié en su significado e iconografía.

The story of Lucretia, narrated among others by Livy, has been one of the passages of the Roman civilization that has had the greatest impact on Western iconography and art. The Iberian Peninsula was not alien to that use, and sometimes abuse, of Lucrecia’s image. She was converted into an exemplum, model of chastity and virtue, which caused the fall of the Roman monarchy. His image was used by married or marriageable women as an equalization of their moral status in the Renaissance, as is evident in representations in Spanish palaces and engravings. But also as a sexualized and erotic image, an idea very different from the original Roman conception. Through this article, we will analyze the repercussions of the passage related to Lucrecia in the Iberian Peninsula, emphasizing its meaning and iconography.
