Abstract
El envejecimiento es un proceso progresivo y general, caracterizado por la disminución de las funciones del organismo y por una menor capacidad de adaptación a los cambios y de recuperación dela homeostasis. Según la teoría de la oxidación-inflamación, este proceso se debe al establecimiento de un estrés oxidativo e inflamatorio crónico que afecta a todas las células del organismo, pero de manera más relevante a las de los sistemas reguladores, el nervioso, el inmunitario y el endocrino, provocando la pérdida de su funcionalidad, y de la comunicación existente entre ellos. Dado que estos sistemas son cruciales para el mantenimiento de la salud, es comprensible la mayor morbilidad y mortalidad que aparece al envejecer. Además, este proceso es muy heterogéneo, por lo que individuos de una misma especie y con idéntica edad cronológica, pueden estar envejeciendo a diferente velocidad. Aging is a progressive and general process, characterized by a deterioration of the functions of the organism and by a reduced capacity to adapt to changes and to recover homeostasis. According to the oxidation-inflammation theory, this process is due to the establishment of a chronic oxidative and inflammatory stress that affects all the cells of the organism, but more significantly those of the systems, nervous, immune, and endocrine, causing the loss of their functionality and of the communication between them. Given that these systems are crucial for maintaining health, the increased morbidity and mortality that appear as we age is understandable. Moreover, this process is very heterogeneous, so individuals of the same species and with identical chronological age may be aging at different rates.
