Against love: women, madness, and the state in angloamerican fiction (1939-1954)

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is twofold: on the one hand, I wish to situate and shed light on scarcely studied works by Jean Rhys, Leonora Carrington, Anna Kavan and Shirley Jackson. I do this by providing a literature review and developing my own critical framework, within the larger theoretical basis of this dissertation, in order to analyse their works in a different light from previous criticism. On the other hand, this dissertation aims to assess the meanings of the representation of madness in the worksof Jean Rhys, Leonora Carrington, Anna Kavan and Shirley Jackson from a gender and new historicist standpoint. By looking at the chosen corpus as “countersentimental” novels, following critical theorist Lauren Berlant, I explain how they respond to the institutionalisation of psychiatry as a state tool to manage gender, compulsory heterosexuality and the national discourse...El objetivo del presente estudio es doble: por un lado, pretendo situar y recuperar obras poco estudiadas de Jean Rhys, Leonora Carrington, Anna Kavan y Shirley Jackson. Para ello, proporciono una revisión del estado de la cuestión y desarrollo mi propio marco de análisis crítico, dentro de una base teórica más amplia, para llevar acabo un análisis de las obras seleccionadas desde una perspectiva diferente a la crítica anterior. Por otro lado, esta tesis pretende explorar los significados de la representación de la locura en las obras de Jean Rhys, Leonora Carrington, Anna Kavan y Shirley Jackson desde un punto de vista neohistoricista y de género.
