Abstract
The idea of founding a Spanish institution in Athens devoted to historical and archaeological studies is already 150 years old. In that period different projects have been followed, some promoted by Spanish institutions, others by private personalities, that for a reason or another -such as the lack of a colonial policy of Spain in the eastern Mediterranean in the 19th and 20th centuries, or the previous existence of an academic institution in Rome-, have never come to crystallize. Among the most important attempts we will highlight those that took place in the 20’s, promoted by José Ramón Mélida; in the 1990’s, with the acquisition by José María Luzón Nogué of a headquarters to carry out the foundation of the School of Archaeology; and more recently in 2018, with the compromise reached between the UAM, headed by Adolfo Domínguez Monedero, and the Cervantes Institute of Athens, to organize and launch a Spanish School of Hellenic Studies.
