Abstract
Esta investigación examina el consumo informativo en redes sociales de los estudiantes universitarios de Comunicación del sur de Florida (Estados Unidos), analizando sus hábitos, motivaciones y percepciones sobre los medios tradicionales en el contexto de un ecosistema mediático en rápida evolución. La investigación se fundamenta en la teoría de usos y gratificaciones, explorando cómo esta generación Z, considerados nativos digitales, satisface sus necesidades informativas en el entorno digital. Mediante una metodología mixta, el estudio combina 243 encuestas a estudiantes, un grupo focal con nueve egresados y nueve entrevistas en profundidad a profesionales de medios. Los resultados revelan que la gran mayoría de los estudiantes prefiere informarse a través de redes sociales, dedicando varias horas diarias a estas plataformas, con Instagram, TikTok y YouTube como las más populares. This research examines the information consumption on social network sites by Communication university students in South Florida, analyzing their habits, motivations, and perceptions of legacy media within the context of a rapidly evolving media ecosystem. The research is based on the uses and gratifications theory, exploring how this Generation Z, known as digital natives, satisfies their informational needs in the digital environment. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines 243 surveys of students, a focus group with nine graduates, and nine in-depth interviews with media professionals. The results reveal that the vast majority of students prefer to get informed through social media, spending several hours a day on these platforms, with Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube being the most popular. Paradoxically, although they trust legacy media more and recognize their higher standard of professionalism and ethics compared to other online content, they barely consume them, limiting themselves to incidental or indirect use...
