Abstract
The origin of preventive conservation is not well-defined, although it can be stated that is directly related to the production of works of art and the human desire to preserve them. In the 19th century the conservation and restoration principles were anticipated, and in the 20th century the scientific and application concepts were developed, always in the museum context. In this first part we try to present the history of preventive conservation since their origins to 1990 indicating the important events occurred before and after the Second World War.
