Abstract
This article questions the immaterial labour concept in order to provide some keys to a sociological study of labour in the contemporary Western societies based on Marxian theoretical tools while moreover considering the role of the body and materiality. The paper is divided into four sections. The first one presents the state of the art of the immaterial labour notion. In the second section, we question the Marxian distinction between concrete and abstract labour, making a critique of post-operaist thought. In the third part, we point out some of the contradictions of labour immateriality on the basis of the corporeity, non-human factors and mercantile dimension of the work products. Lastly, we review the core contributions of this study.
