Acabados y dorado del mobiliario. De la teoría a la práctica

Abstract

Esta investigación doctoral versa sobre el dorado y los acabados del mobiliario y su propuesta de análisis responden al interés de profundizar en la historia material de este tipo de producción artística. La escasez de estudios específicos sobre las características, significado y evolución de ambas técnicas en el mobiliario constituye uno de los motivos que nos ha impulsado a abordar esta tesis. Con ella se pretende, además, confrontar en las fuentes históricas una serie de lugares comunes sobre estas técnicas, difundidas tanto por los propios artesanos del oficio como por diferentes tipos de publicaciones. El objetivo general de esta investigación ha consistido en la descripción de la evolución tecnológica del dorado y los acabados en el mobiliario europeo desde la época medieval hasta finales del siglo XIX, momento en que se afianza su fabricación industrial. Se apuntan además un conjunto de antecedentes históricos referidos a Egipto y a la Antigüedad clásica, por considerarlos imprescindibles para la mejor comprensión del desarrollo de ambas técnicas. Para efectuar esta tarea, aunque nos centramos en España, hemos convenido incluir referencias a Inglaterra, Francia e Italia, por ser los países donde la producción bibliográfica, tanto de técnicas artísticas en general como de dorados y acabados, es notablemente mayor. Del mismo modo, representan en las distintas épocas en estudio el lugar de origen de gran parte de las innovaciones estilísticas y tecnológicas relativas al ámbito del mobiliario. Si bien con este estudio no se ha pretendido agotar la materia de análisis, se ha reconstruido una panorámica general que puede servir de punto de partida para futuras investigaciones más concretas. Entre los objetivos específicos de este estudio destacan, en primer lugar, el propósito de verificar la aplicación en la práctica de los métodos y materiales recogidos en las fuentes literarias para la ejecución de los acabados y el dorado. En segundo lugar, probar la validez de un sistema de estudio que aúne investigación histórica y científica para conocer el mobiliario del pasado. En tercer lugar, proporcionar una bibliografía lo más exhaustiva posible sobre ambas técnicas. Por último, contribuir a poner en valor estas técnicas del mobiliario con el propósito de transmitir la necesidad de su adecuada conservación...This doctoral research is dedicated to gilding and furniture finishes (varnishes, wax and oils), analysing them in response to an interest in the material history of this form of artistic production. The lack of specific studies on the characteristics, significance and evolution of these techniques on furniture is one of the reasons that prompted this thesis. What is also intended is to compare a series of commonplaces regarding these techniques, obtained from historical sources, disseminated by artisans themselves and by different types of publications. The general aim of this research project has involved providing a description of the technological evolution of gilding and finishes in European furniture from Mediaeval times until the end of the 19th century, which marked the consolidation of the industrial production of the technology. Historical forerunners in Ancient Egypt and Greece and Rome are mentioned because they are considered essential in order to better understand the development of these techniques. To carry out this task, although centred on Spain, I have included references to Great Britain, France and Italy, because they are countries where the literature on artistic techniques such as gilding and other finishes is quite extensive. Likewise, they represent different ages in the study of the place of origin of the stylistic and technological innovations in the field of furniture. Although this study is not meant to cover the entire matter being analysed, a general view has been reconstructed that could serve as a starting point for more specific research in the future. The specific goals of this study include, first of all, verifying the practical application of the methods and materials mentioned in literary sources of the implementation of gilding and other finishes. Secondly, to prove the validity of a system of study that brings together historical and scientific research on the furniture of the past. Thirdly, to provide the most extensive bibliography possible on these techniques. Last of all, to contribute to showcasing these furniture techniques with the purpose of conveying the need for their appropriate conservation. For this task I have studied bibliographical sources (European literature on artistic techniques, books of secrets, natural history, trade and industry texts, dictionaries on arts and trades, literature on the history of furniture and its makers, etc.), documentary sources (the accounts of gilders, cabinetmakers and other artisans in the field of furniture, invoices from commercial establishments for the supply of materials for the work done by such artisans at royal palaces, inventories, antiques shops, valuations of goods and letters of endowment, whether royal or private, guild bylaws, etc.), as well as the analysis, whether direct or through scientific examination methods, of pieces of furniture representing the techniques being researched.
