La resistencia a antimicrobianos supone actualmente uno de los principales problemas de salud pública. La incidencia de infecciones por bacterias multirresistentes (BMR) se ha incrementado en las últimas décadas de forma significativa, habiendo sido recientemente incluidas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) dentro de las diez amenazas para la salud global. Las infecciones por BMR presentan un peor pronóstico debido al retraso del inicio de la antibioterapia adecuada y la necesidad de antibióticos alternativos, menos efectivos y con peor perfil de toxicidad. Antimicrobial resistance is currently one of the major public health issues. The incidence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR) has significantly increased in recent decades, recently being included by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the top ten threats to global health.
