Abstract
The project on the Acheulean sites of Torralba and Ambrona (Soria. Spain) commenced during 1990. The starting point was the necessity to define the natural environment in which human activity developed in the area; the aim was to deepen the knowledge of the site formation processes. From 1993 to the year 2000 annual archaeological campaigns have been carried out at the site of Ambrona, 630 m2 of soil was excavated from the central and western parts of the site whereas only 58 m2 were extracted from the East of the site. This was done in order to have a better understanding of the stratigraphy of the site as well as assessing the archaeological potential of the area. From 1994 to 1999 work was carried out at Torralba. lt mainly consisted of surveys of the area to draw an outline of the site and its stratigraphy, as well as evaluating the possibility of any new areas for future excavations. The work was discontinued during the year 2000 in order to prepare a monograph focused on the inferior levels of Ambrona. Even though the excavations have not been followed, magnetic and electric surveys have been carried out at TorraIba and Ambrona as well as other field work in relation to the extraction of samples for dating and magneto-stratigraphies.
