Abstract
The doctoral thesis entitled “Historical evolution of researches on the morphology of the human vitreous body in the Contemporary Age” is presented here. This is a pioneering study in the timeline of the major discoveries on the structure of the human vitreous body, utilizing an innovative development-oriented chronological approach. Because the vitreous body is virtually transparent and scaffolded in a fine and discrete structure, it has been a part of the human body difficult to study and understand. Also, being within the human eye, in vivo access has been very difficult. Nevertheless, with advancements in microscopy and histological techniques, there has been increasing interest to study the morphology since the mid nineteenth century. Moreover, with the influence of the first observations of vitreous and retinal pathology using the ophthalmoscope, and the development of the slit lamp, a new interpretation was promoted for in vivo morphology from the end of the First World War. In particular, after 1945, there have been numerous in depth investigations leading to greater understanding and advances. After an exhaustive search, we could not find any work, whether in books or as doctoral thesis focused exclusively on the anatomy of the vitreous body from a historical point of view, especially since the second half of the 19th century. For this reason we have directed our efforts in creating a study that broadly addresses this issue...
