La Vaguada de Cantarranas: visiones y relatos de un lugar soterrado

Abstract

Esta tesis estudia la desaparecida Vaguada de Cantarranas, parte de la antigua Finca de la Moncloa y, más tarde, centro verde que dividía en dos la Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid. Al centro de esta topografía accidentada —rellenada y nivelada en los años 1960— discurría un arroyo que regaba una amplia zona verde, hoy perdida, pero que en otros tiempos representó para los madrileños un lugar cercano a la capital a la vez que alejada de su ajetreo, zona de meriendas dominicales, exploraciones de infancia, ensayos de explosivos, encuentros amorosos, suicidios y paseos. En el imaginario se vinculaba con el legado goyesco, a la vez que se consideraba parte del ‘paisaje velazqueño’. En ella se encontraron los vestigios de uno de los primeros asentamientos prehistóricos de Madrid y, durante la Guerra Civil, representó un tramo clave del frente. Desde un acercamiento al saber experiencial del detalle, esta investigación rescata las memorias de este lugar, desde su morfología física y ecología, su presencia en la vida e imaginario de los madrileños desde finales del siglo XIX hasta mediados del XX, las vivencias de distintas personas que se vinculaban con ella, y las corrientes artísticas, arquitectónicas y políticas que se entremezclan con su historia.This dissertation studies Madrid’s lost Vaguada de Cantarranas, part of the Finca de la Moncloa and, subsequently, a green belt dividing the Ciudad Universitaria or “University City” in two. "rough the center of this varied topography, which was filled in and flattened in the 1960s, there followed a creek that provided water for a broad green space that today has been lost, but which in other times provided Madrid’s inhabitants with a place that was at once near the capital but protected from its hustle and bustle, used for Sunday picnics, childhood explorations, clandestine bomb testing, romantic encounters, suicides and leisurely walks. In the local imagination, it conjured both the universe of Goya and the landscape of Velázquez. It was also the site of one of the earliest known prehistoric settlements in Madrid, and, during the Civil War, a key section of the battlefront passed through it. Following an approach based on the experiential knowledge inherent in detail, this dissertation explores aspects such as the Vaguada’s physical morphology and ecology, its presence in the life and imaginary of the inhabitants of Madrid from the late 19th to mid 20th centuries, the stories of various people whose paths became entwined with the area, and the artistic, architecture and political currents that have intersected with its history.
