Abstract
Literature is a powerful form of expression that can reflect and profoundly influence social reality. The novel, as an important form of literature and a communicative product, becomes a widely spread and accepted cultural medium in society. In this context, the romance novel, as it plays a relevant role in the field of emotions and love, has a remarkable impact on the value formation of its readers, who are mostly young people lacking corresponding experience and women with emotional needs. For this purpose, we analyze the way in which relationships and marriage of the five most popular online romance novels on the digital platform Douban are posed. The context of the novels is studied and compared with the reality in China. The results show that the novels largely reflect the reality of relationships and marriage in China, for example, the delay in the age of marriage, the concern about the physical appearance of the couple, the homogeneous pairing in terms of academic background and income level, the significant positive effects of parent-child relationships in resolving conflicts between couples, the strong economic support from parents, the separation between sex and love, the separation between sex and marriage, and women's concern about their experiences and feelings in sex. At the same time, there are some differences between novels and reality, for example, female authors appreciate strong, independent and courageous women more, while men prefer tender, charming women who take good care of the family as their partners in real life. Otherwise, married couples never live together with the parents and parents interfere very little in the marriage or in the new family of their children. These aspects also do not match the Chinese reality, but they show the ideal state of marriage for Chinese women conveyed by this type of literature.
