Abstract
This PhD thesis, (‘Flos sanctorum’ of the Spanish realist novel (1874-1895): the representation of sainthood), aims to provide a survey of Spanish novels of that period in order to analyse the way in which Realist writers depicted the phenomenon of saintliness in their masterpieces. The research journey through the way in which sanctimony is materialised in the different stages of Hispanic Realism (thesis novels, Naturalism and Spiritualism, respectively) represents a contribution to the critical debate that revolves around the issue of the genuine idiosyncrasy of Spanish Realism; a debate that has sought to investigate the degree of influence that both French Naturalism and Russian Spiritualism exerted on Spanish literature.First, starting from the definition of the terms sainthood and saint established by the different nineteenth-century dictionaries and lexicons, the meaning of both concepts is completed with that of various nineteenth-century Christian treatises and works which, from a theological point of view, dealt with the explanation of holiness. After studying the image of saintliness offered by another genre of texts, hagiographical texts, we proceed to analyse the way in which sanctity is represented in the Spanish realist novel. For this purpose, a specific corpus of texts has been established, which, by focusing on the best works of the period between 1874 and 1895, seeks to obtain a sufficiently broad perspective to be able to observe the scope of this religious phenomenon throughout the whole period of the realist novel...
