El Año Internacional del planeta Tierra

Abstract

La propuesta de organizar la conmemoración de un Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra fue lanzada, en 2001, por la Unión Internacional de Ciencias Geológicas (IUGS), conjuntamente con la División de Ciencias de la Tierra de la UNESCO. Unos años después, en Diciembre de 2005, la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas ha proclamado oficialmente 2008 como Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra. Múltiples países están apoyando esta iniciativa que, en realidad, se desarrollará como un trienio de actividades (2007-2009), con 2008 en su centro. El objetivo es hacer patente que las Ciencias de la Tierra pueden contribuir a que las futuras generaciones resuelvan los retos existentes y aseguren un mundo más próspero y seguro. La realización del Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra supone la creación de una estructura organizativa, tanto a nivel internacional como en cada país, que lleve a cabo propuestas y actividades. El Año Internacional comprende un programa científico y un programa de difusión de las Ciencias de la Tierra hacia la sociedad, incluyendo en este concepto el gran público, los medios de comunicación, la clase política y los agentes sociales con capacidad de decisión y gestión. En España, la Comisión nacional de Geología lleva casi dos años preparándose para la organización del evento en nuestro país y estableciendo contactos con instituciones y asociaciones de otros países. Próxima ya la fecha de arranque de este proyecto, es el momento de programar e ir precisando las actividades que harán del Año Internacional del Planeta Tierra una oportunidad única para incrementar la sensibilidad de los ciudadanos hacia lo que las Ciencias de la Tierra ofrecen en cuanto a cultura y bienestar.

An initiative to organise an International Year of Planet Earth was launched in 2001 by the International Union of Geological Sciences in 2001 jointly with the Earth Science Division from UNESCO. Some years later, by December 2005, the General Assembly of United Nations has proclaimed officially the International Year of Planet Earth for 2008. Many countries have supported so far the initiative that actually will comprise a three-years period of activities (2007-2009), 2008 being the central year of the triennium. The aim of the International Year is to demonstrate that geosciences can contribute significantly to a safer, healthier and wealthier world, and that this potential contribution is seriously under-used by society and should be substantially increased. The celebration of the International Year of Planet Earth needs to create a solid organising framework, at both international and national scale, that impulses proposals and activities. The organisation of the International Year will include a Scientific Programme and an Outreach Programme of geosciences towards Society, this comprising big public, mass media, politicians and decision-makers. In Spain, the National Commission for Geology has been preparing and developing initiatives during the past two years. Contacts and links to institutions and associations from other countries have been established in order to enlarge the presence of the International Year of Planet Earth worldwide. Approaching 2007, it is the time to program more precisely the activities that will make this event to be a great chance for increasing sensitivity of citizens to what Geosciences offer in terms of both culture and welfare..
