Una espiral de radicalización: terrorismo y opinión pública durante la campaña de ETA (1981-2010)

Abstract

En este artículo se estudian las interrelaciones entre el desarrollo de una campaña terrorista y la evolución de los estados de la opinión pública dentro de la comunidad de referencia que sirve de soporte a los actores armados. Para ello, nos basamos en la teoría de la opinión pública de Noelle-Neumann, según la cual ésta se configura dinámicamente como una «espiral de silencio». Tomando en consideración el caso de ETA en el País Vasco, analizamos empíricamente la relación mutua entre las muertes ocasionadas en los atentados de esa organización terrorista y la evolución de la adhesión política a ETA dentro de la izquierda abertzale. Los resultados de la estimación de un modelo de regresión señalan que, efectivamente, las interacciones entre esas dos variables avalan la tesis de que, en el País Vasco, se configuró una «espiral de radicalización» que sirvió de soporte a la espiral de silencio que se extendió sobre una parte importante de la sociedad vasca, que prefirió «mirar hacia otra parte» y justificar su pusilanimidad atribuyendo a las víctimas que «algo habrían hecho» para ser abatidas por ETA.

This article studies interrelations between the development of a terrorist campaign and the evolution of the states of public opinion within the reference community that supports them. For this purpose, use the theory of public opinion of Noelle-Neumann, according to which it is dynamically configured as a "spiral of silence." Taking into consideration the case of the Basque terrorist group Euskadi ta Askatasuna (ETA) empirically analyse the mutual relationship between the deaths caused in the attacks of that terrorist organization and the evolution of political adhesion to ETA within the abertzale (patriotic) left. The results of the estimation of a regression model indicate that, over the period studied, there was indeed an interaction between these two variables that support the thesis of a "spiral of radicalization" in the Basque Country. This would have induced a spiral of silence that extended to an important part of Basque society, which preferred to "look elsewhere" justifying their pusillanimity by attributing that the victims "had surely done something wrong", deserving being executed by ETA
