Abstract
El agua es un recurso fundamental para el ser humano, imprescindible para una vida digna. El acceso a agua potable de buena calidad, en cantidades suficientes y de manera sostenible en el tiempo está recogido como derecho humano fundamental por las Naciones Unidas (2010), en su resolución 64/292. Sin embargo, los datos evidencian una grave problemática ligada al acceso a este recurso. La región del Sahel, al sur del desierto del Sahara, en África, presenta la menor cobertura de agua potable del planeta. Únicamente el 65% de la población tiene acceso al menos a un servicio básico de agua potable, entendiéndose por tal el acceso a una fuente de agua mejorada en el hogar o con un tiempo de recogida y acarreo inferior a 30 minutos. Como las propias Naciones Unidas reconocen, esta cifra es posiblemente una sobrevaloración, puesto que existen deficiencias importantes en los indicadores utilizados para llegar a ella...
Water is a fundamental resource for human beings, essential for a dignified life. Access to drinking water of good quality, in sufficient quantities and in a sustainable manner over time is recognized as a fundamental human right by the United Nations (2010), in its resolution 64/292. However, the data show a serious problem linked to access to this resource. The Sahel region, south of the Sahara Desert in Africa, has the lowest drinking water coverage on the planet. Only 65 per cent of the population has access to at least a basic drinking water service, meaning access to an improved water source at home or with a collection and haulage time of less than 30 minutes. As the United Nations itself acknowledges, this figure is possibly an overestimation, as there are significant shortcomings in the indicators used to arrive at it...
