Abstract
Conflict warfare in the XXI Century shows new forms of war. It can also be seen a change in the ways of making diagnosis, transport and treatment of the conflict victims that have provided an increase of the survival rate of those injured people. The learned lessons have been applied for the treatment of trauma patient in the civil healthcare domain, including the assistance of casualties in operation theatres far away from Europe and their repatriation to national territory using suitable air means. In Spain, the Aeromedical Evacuation Unit of the Air Force (UMAER) has implemented those learned lessons in his work, to provide a medical evacuation system where injured people could get to a complete diagnosis and to a definitive treatment in national territory, using appropriate air means, specific equipment and trained flight medical crew to work in the specific aeronautical environment. From the epidemiological study for the last 10 years of the UMAER mission records, a great variety of pathologies and evacuated patients are brought to light. This shows the flexibility and the high spectrum of work of the aeromedical personnel and the variety of habilities that has been developed in UMAER. This study outlines favourable results that provide a valuable capacity of specific medical assistance for injured people using air transport; that can be applied in any situation of disaster.
