Enemigos seculares: la violencia anticlerical (1936-1939)

Abstract

Este capítulo ofrece un balance general de la violencia sufrida por la Iglesia y sus representantes durante la Guerra Civil de 1936-1939 en España. En primer lugar, se aporta una descripción del fenómeno, subrayando y definiendo el carácter particularmente intenso de esa violencia en comparación con la sufrida por otras instituciones y grupos sociales. A continuación se hace una lectura crítica de las distintas interpretaciones que tratan de dar cuenta de esa particular intensidad, sobre todo desde la antropología y la historia. Y finalmente se aporta una propuesta interpretativa que hace hincapié en la confluencia de tres elementos principales: la presencia de una enraizada cultura política anticlerical que vendría de al menos un siglo antes y que presentaba al clero como “enemigo” por antonomasia; el contexto de guerra civil “total” que llevó al anticlericalismo al terreno de una lucha a muerte; y la situación del poder en la retaguardia republicana, cuyas diferencias determinan las importantes variaciones temporales y geográficas en la violencia anticlerical a lo largo y ancho de esa retaguardia.

This chapter provides an interpretative balance sheet for the violence endured by the Church and its representatives during the Spanish Civil War. It begins with a brief description of the phenomenon which puts emphasis on the especially intense character of this aggression compared to that endured by other social groups and institutions. The paper moves on to a critical reading of the different interpretations which are offered as explanations for this particular intensity, with special attention given to those offered by history and anthropology. Lastly, the paper offers an interpretive proposal which focuses on the confluence of three primary elements: the presence of a deep-rooted anticlerical political culture—which held the clergy to be the “enemy” in the fullest sense of the word; the context of “total” civil war that made anticlericalism a part of the fight to the death; and the configuration of power in the Republican rearguard, whose nuances explain the important temporal and geographical variations in the anticlerical violence.
