Estudio de la presencia de iconología cristiana en la serie True Detective

Abstract

En 2014, True Detective batía records de audiencia en Estados Unidos y se convirtía rápidamente en un éxito internacional de público y crítica. Un aspecto notable, si no sorprendente, de esta serie de éxito estriba en la presencia en su interior de abundantes referencias al universo iconográfico cristiano. Durante su emisión, la iconografía de la serie suscitaba gran interés en las redes y pronto aparecian numerosos foros en los que se discutía su significado; pero los estudios existentes hasta la actualidad se han centrado en otras referencias culturales: las relativas a la filosofía nietzscheana o a la literatura gótica, sin duda también ellas presentes pero no de manera más relevante y que, sobre todo, solo pueden ser correctamente analizadas en su relación dialéctica con aquellas. Este es el motivo por el que el presente trabajo se centra en la catalogación de las referencias iconológicas al cristianismo y en el posterior análisis de su funcionamiento textual. El resultado de nuestra investigación ha permitido no solo catalogar un alto número de referencias iconológicas relativas tanto al universo simbólico cristiano en general como a la figura concreta de Jesucristo, sino también establecer que esas referencias desempeñan una función determinante en la construcción de la figura del héroe y en las resonancias mitológicas de su trayecto narrativo.

In 2014, “True Detective” obtained an immediate audience ovation in United States, and quickly after it became an international success also. One notorious aspect, even surprising, of this successful fiction show comes from the inner presence of abundant references of the Christian iconological universe which have not been paid attention properly in the academic field. The iconography on the show created hype on social media and diverse web pages were dedicated to debate its meaning. Still, other existing investigations up until today have focused on different cultural references relating the philosophy of Nietzsche or gothic literature. No doubt, both topics are also present in the series but not in a more relevant manner. Therefore, they can only be correctly analyzed by relating them to the Christian iconological references addressed in this work. Which is the reason this investigation is based on cataloging Christian references and analyzing their textual function. The results of this investigation have allowed not just cataloging a considerate amount of iconological references from both the Christian symbolic universe and the figure of Jesus Christ, but also to demonstrate that these references perform an essential role in the construction of the hero character and the mythological resonance of his narrative journey.
