p-adic numbers and non-Archimedean valuations

Abstract

This is an expository article on p-adic fields. It contains a historical introduction and a construction of the p-adic number field by completion for the p-adic distance overQ. The paper concludes with the Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms and the definition of Henselian fields.
