Ortega y la otra América: capitalismo, creencias y confluencias

Abstract

El propósito de este capítulo es realizar un viaje de ida y vuelta entre Madrid y Estados Unidos. En dicho viaje se atenderá a una serie de hitos específicos que sirvan de marco de referencia para una comprensión adecuada del diálogo existente -aunque latente- entre el pensamiento norteamericano y el de Ortega y Gasset. Concretamente, se abordarán los siguientes puntos: 1) cómo concibe Ortega a los Estados Unidos en tanto que pueblo joven, americano y "colonial"; 2) de qué modo vincula en su sistema de pensamiento el modo de vida norteamericano, la expansión estadounidense por el territorio en la conquista del Oeste, el desarrollo urbanístico y el capitalismo; y, en relación con ello, cómo comprende que lo indicado subyace a una racionalidad meramente instrumental que él atribuye al pragmatismo clásico; 3) las creencias como elemento de contacto entre Ortega y una serie de autores norteamericanos clásicos, especialmente William Janes; y 4) algunas recepciones estadounidenses de Ortega en la segunda mitad del siglo XX que pueden ser debidamente interpretadas a la luz de lo expuesto en los apartados anteriores.

The aim of this chapter is to make a round trip between Madrid and the United States. On this trip, a series of specific milestones will be addressed that serve as a frame of reference for an adequate understanding of the existing dialogue - although latent - between North American thought and that of Ortega y Gasset. Specifically, the following points will be addressed: 1) how Ortega conceives the United States as a young, American and "colonial" people; 2) how in his system of thought he links the North American way of life, the American expansion across the territory in the conquest of the West, urban development and capitalism; and, in relation to this, how he understands that what is indicated underlies a merely instrumental rationality that he attributes to classical pragmatism; 3) beliefs as an element of contact between Ortega and a series of classic North American authors, especially William Janes; and 4) some American receptions of Ortega in the second half of the 20th century that can be properly interpreted in light of what has been explained in the previous sections.
