El espejo portugués. El Partido Comunista de España (PCE) ante la Revolución de los Claveles

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza la actitud que el PCE adoptó hacia el proceso revolucionario portugués entre la primavera de 1974 y el otoño de 1975. Dicha actitud estuvo inextricablemente vinculada a la voluntad del partido de proyectar una imagen de sí mismo que sirviese para su legitimación democrática en vista del cambio posfranquista que se acercaba en España. En esta óptica, el PCE, aunque subrayó constantemente la necesidad de que el nuevo régimen que se estaba construyendo en Portugal se basara en el pleno respeto de las libertades pluralistas y de la dinámica electoral, criticó ásperamente la línea promovida por su homólogo luso, el PCP, que rechazaba la perspectiva de una democratización de corte occidental y manifestaba tendencias autoritarias. En óptica comparada, el artículo analiza también las posturas hacia la revolución portuguesa mantenidas por otros partidos comunistas de Europa Oriental y Occidental, y presta atención a los crecientes desencuentros que, a mediados de la década de 1970, se iban produciendo entre el PCE y buena parte del movimiento comunista internacional.

This article analyses the attitude that the PCE adopted towards the Portuguese revolutionary process between the spring of 1974 and the autumn of 1975. This attitude was inextricably linked to the party’s desire to project an image of itself that was functional to its democratic legitimation in view of the oncoming post-Franco change in Spain. From this perspective, the PCE, while stressing the need for the new Portuguese regime to be based on full respect for pluralist freedoms and electoral dynamics, harshly criticised the line promoted by its Portuguese counterpart, the PCP, which rejected the prospect of Western-style democratisation and displayed authoritarian tendencies. In a comparative perspective, the article also analyses the positions towards the Portuguese revolution held by other Eastern and Western European communist parties, paying attention to the growing disagreements that, in the mid-1970s, were eroding the relations between the PCE and a large part of the international communist movement.
