Abstract
Millions of influenza virus infection episodes occur annually, constituting an important mortality cause during the epidemic months. One of the most severe complications of influenza is the development of respiratory failure, which can result in the need for ventilatory support and intensive care. Descriptions and characterization of influenza associated respiratory failure in the existing literature are complex, partly due to heterogeneous definitions. This makes it difficult to estimate its impact and to identify its risk factors. Precisely profiling this phenomenon, establishing the implicated risk factors, and accurately predicting is development could allow for an earlier recognition which could in turn improve both healthcare and resource management of this patients, something especially important during respiratory virus pandemics...
