El cáncer es la principal causa de muerte prematura en la mayor parte de los países desarrollados, y se espera que en los próximos años también lo sea en gran parte de los países en vías de desarrollo. Actualmente, las principales terapias empleadas en el tratamiento de los distintos tipos de cáncer presentan numerosos problemas, entre los que destaca la falta de especificidad. Estos hechos implican que el desarrollo de nuevas terapias antitumorales con mayor selectividad y eficacia, sea un reto importante en la investigación oncológica actual.
