Abjected Subjects, Subjected Abjects : A Psycho-Mythical Exegesis of Madness and Identity in the Gothic

Abstract

The configuration of subjecthood is most frequently determined by sociocultural factors. These, among others, are relied upon in society to define both personal and social identities, and with those, the traits that we associate to the core essence of a subject. However, not all types of subjectivity are equally accepted in society; civilisations, from the earliest tribes to the most advanced nation-states, often add nuance to the issues of subjecthood and accepted subjectivities in an attempt to standardise and homogenise, which often results in the impingement of human rights, essence, and nature. This thesis explores the psychiatric subject, a nosological category whose origins can be traced back to the Enlightenment, the new paradigmatic systems of through derived thereof, like positivism and empiricism, and to the Enlightened discourse of Reason. This discourse, which became the cornerstone of the hegemonic structures of power after the Enlightenment, gained predominance through the attack and dismissal of the transcendent and the reconceptualisation of the immanent and the rational as the only possible expressions of human nature. At the same time, it reconfigured culture and societies through the normalisation of dyadic, Manichean systems of thought which became the foundations of discourses of exclusion and abjection...La configuración de la subjetividad se ve determinada, a menudo por, factores socioculturales. Estos, entre otros, son utilizados en la sociedad para definir tanto las identidades personales como sociales y, con ellas, los rasgos que asociamos a la esencia central de un sujeto. Sin embargo, no todos los tipos de subjetividad son igualmente aceptados en la sociedad; las civilizaciones, desde las primeras tribus hasta los estados-nación más avanzados, suelen añadir matices a las cuestiones de subjetividad y las identidades aceptadas en un intento de estandarizar y homogeneizar, lo que a menudo resulta en la vulneración de los derechos, esencia y naturaleza humanas. Esta tesis explora la identidad del sujeto psiquiátrico, una categoría nosológica cuyos orígenes se remontan a la Ilustración, a los nuevos sistemas paradigmáticos de pensamiento que de allí se derivaron, como el positivismo y el empirismo, y al discurso ilustrado de la Razón. Este discurso, que se convirtió en la piedra angular de las estructuras hegemónicas de poder tras la Ilustración, ganó predominio a través del ataque y la desestimación de lo trascendente y la reconceptualización de lo inmanente y lo racional como las únicas expresiones posibles de la naturaleza humana.
